The short version

Clearing goods means telling SARS what has arrived, what it is worth and what it is, then paying the duty and VAT due. Mistakes cost time and money, which is why most importers use a licensed agent.

  1. RegisterRegister with SARS as an importer. You need this before you can import commercially.
  2. Gather the documentsCommercial invoice, packing list and the transport document (bill of lading or air waybill), plus any permits your goods need.
  3. Classify the goodsEvery product has a tariff code that decides the duty rate. The right code matters.
  4. Value the goodsCustoms value is built from the price and freight and insurance to the border. SARS checks it.
  5. Submit the entryThe clearing agent submits the customs declaration electronically.
  6. Pay duty and VATDuty and import VAT are paid before the goods are released.
  7. Release and deliverOnce SARS releases the cargo, it is delivered to you.

Questions we get

Do I need to be registered?

To import commercially you must be registered with SARS as an importer, with a customs client number. We can tell you what is needed.

Do all goods need a permit?
